from muses to muse(um)/
18.10.2014
one decides to start with a museum's attempt to remember its own history.
thinking.
if emails are recording traces of our lives, what emails are tracing the life of the museum?
is there such a thing as a life of a museum?
similarly, we could also ask: can a museum fall in love? or can one fall in love with a museum?
and then again. this is only the beginning.

(history) OF (temptation)
slowly.
ok. let me start again.
slowly.
tasting the last bits of temptation
of reading books that bring back memories.
temptation to ask. to say: “i'm angry!”
to smile. to feel disappointed. to feel hurt.
to run through the forest one more time.
to smell the coming autumn. the leaving summer.
the summer rain.
the last gaze of the sea.
to write emails nobody reads. or answers to.
to not recycle trash. to change banks. to write a complaint over and over again.
to cry. to listen to a friend crying. to see a newborn baby sleeping. to accept the past.
to forgive. to not forgive. to hate. to love. to love.
to pee in the bushes. to love. to break. to sleep in somebody else's tent.
to not sleep. to be in pain. to laugh. to feel victorious. to see a visionary.
to decide. to remember the words tengo miedo.
to remember the words tengo miedo within the right context.
to talk about vitomil zupan. to say hemingway is trivial in comparison.
to read more than usual.
to read again. to think again. to swim naked. to gossip.
to not write a diary.
to change glasses. to say life will change in september.
to think over and over again.
to feel sick. to put on weight. to feel better.
to birthday. to mothers. to cats.
to the future. to nostalgia. to history of mankind.
to new connections that will change everything.
to say sorry i don’t want to dance.
to understand that you don’t want to return.
to fail to remember the joy.
to say i'm sorry. i'm sorry. i'm sorry.
to reconnect. to break the rules. to wonder where he is.
to understand why.

Dear A,
that day on that strange but wonderful morning you asked me
to write.
and i wrote.
and you wrote.
and i wrote again.
better, more resourceful, more daring and more skillful texts than ever before.
until one day you stopped writing.
and i stopped too.
not immediately.
but slowly, email by email i gave up.
i wondered often what happened
between that morning
your emails that always started with dear n
the night that you told me see you tomorrow
and the tomorrow that is now many yesterdays back
when you decided to disappear.
but
hey
A!
in and with the spirit of our first encounter
i won't let you disappear completely
just yet so easily!
you, A, introduced into my life something new
a complete obsession
not a romantic one
not a sexual one
but
(if i make a small word game)
a literally literary one
maybe
(or not even maybe but quite certainly)
you are living at the back of the MUSEmuseum's mind
you, the MUSE
that made me realized how much i love writing emails
not just any emails
but special ones to special people
you, the MUSE
also reminded me of the joy of writing in my mother tongue
and of how much i am struggling with it at the same time
and of how my language capabilities are shrinking
day by day while lIving abroad
you the MUSE that established certain standards of language
that inspired my potentials
and imagination
to places that surprised even me
you the MUSE that made me realize
that sometimes
the reply of the MUSE is of less importance than the existence of the MUSE itself.
you are also making me realize right at this moment of writing
that writing to you in English
is not quite the same thing.
so while i am again leaving to distant lands
which again brings us to our beginning
of many still unwritten promises
i am waving to you from above the clouds
somewhere over germany
while sending you
without any discomfort
the most splendid of greetings.

I'm writing to you because we have never met and yet the image of you triggers so many creative thoughts.
in the last weeks you became my illusion and a reality, but the reality that is to this point of so much less importance.
before (while lying in my bed, taking a middle of the day hangover nap) i was thinking about the latin term post mortem, and how the noun mortem, which is an accusative form of the word mors (death), sounds so much softer than lets say, its genitive formulation mortis.
would you say that any time spending on declension of latin nouns is a waste of time?
you see, i do it very often. i travel back in time, probably somewhere to the year of 2004 or 2005, trying to remember some of the latin grammar i was once so good at. then i make a declension of a noun or two, sometimes also followed by a conjugation of a few verbs. occasionally i translate some of my poetry into latin.
this is quite a struggle, but i do it out of a strange excitement within the probability of total failure. and since nobody will ever see these awful translations, translating into latin is my personal hidden game, a training of the mind, the interior enjoyment of sentence construction.
what a strange hobby!
(i wonder sometimes when i became such a nerd.)
but these latin structures are a certain kind of addiction. a fixation of mind that always follows the same principles of construction. something that is applicable elsewhere. or in my case, everywhere.
i will make a little breakthrough thought here.
i would propose my attitude towards art (and many other things for that matter) is in some strange tangled way based on my addiction to latin grammar.
you think i exaggerate?
let's have a closer look.
sentence construction. words. meanings. changing. changing meaning by changing order. changing meaning by playing games. putting things from left to right, from up to down. organizing order.
order.
exceptions.
double meanings.
art as a dictionary.
is dictionary the answer?
no, it was a traveling thought.
curating.
here we come back to latin.
curo. (me.)
here we have it. a duchampian word pun!
curare, the infinitive.
to arrange, to take care of. also to heal.
curo me. i cure myself.
but adding the exclamation mark (cura me!) we get a cry for help - cure me!
by mixing two languages curo (me) (first word in latin, second in english), we get a reflexive note to oneself hinting that curo relates to me, myself.
yes, curare.
curating, arranging, means taking care of. of something. or perhaps also of oneself. perhaps also healing oneself from madness.
you see. the mind has no borders.
latin is something we should address again.
as one should not undermine the essential essence of grammar - either real or illusional.
with love,

musemuseum.org could work
muse.net would be wonderful
but it's taken, although it's not in use
try to use some domain check service
also it might be interesting to look for swedish domain ending with .se
like mu.se (for sure it's taken)
perhaps a little sentence
themu.se
ourmu.se
thisismu.se
...
something like that?

very obviously problematic when they are written in slovenian
because the slovene characters č, ž, š are turned into sth strange and impossible to read
i tested one email to send it directly to the muse email in slovenian
works fine
so i suppose we need to fix the form perhaps?
what is your professional opinion?

Dear Ms Jan,
thank you for getting in contact with us.
On October 21, 2014 you made an inquiry into your email archive - trying to find out when
Brigiet van den Berg
appeared in your email archive. You hoped you could find out when and how the first meeting between you, your programmer, Mr. Loogman, and your designer, Ms van den Berg, was arranged.
Unfortunately, we have to disappoint you. In 11.789 email messages that you currently hold in your email archive (going back to January 2009) we couldn't pinpoint the moment when nor how the meeting was arranged.
I asked my assistant to double-check. No success.
But just to be sure I will check again myself.

Hey guys,
The summer is over. Things are starting again.
I’m interested in the status of the Muse project.
I would love to make the next steps happen.
Bram mentioned that you never got the last changes.
I thought I did but I can’t seem to find them either…
I remember making them on the move on my laptop.
But. I don’t know what happend.
I’m sorry...
So I traced my steps did find the smallest notes ever.
can’t believe I found it (it’s attached)
But I don’t really get what they mean anymore.
They say:
- titles on top, archive etc.
- archive in menu last with space
- archive tag: red, green, white, …
- email in archive centred
- < email >
- form: piled paper + vertical
- submit next tot paper
- indent option extra
- audiotour on top of museum
- mtag no ‘>’
- Aa always on top
Hope we can make them into a concrete to do list?

hello hello
i just came back from a (very intensive) trip with my parents in central europe. your email found me already on it, and the funny thing is that while travelling i had some chances to think of audio tours, and at the same time you talked about it, or maybe it was the other way around, but the truth is that it has become a type of project that i am thinking of very often lately. so definitely yes, i would like to be part of the team!
i tried some audio tours, specially because my parents seemed to like it and helped with the language, both in museum type places as in cities. i found it so interesting that the same day i asked a friend (art historian) from my home town to start thinking about doing a project there related to it.
thanks a lot for the good news!!
maybe we can start by talking about it around a beer
un abrazo

i tried some audio tours, specially because my parents seemed to like it and helped with the language, both in museum type places as in cities. i found it so interesting that the same day i asked a friend (art historian) from my home town to start thinking about doing a project there related to it.
thanks a lot for the good news!!
maybe we can start by talking about it around a beer
un abrazo
sergio

ok
we're getting somewhere
i fixed most of the layout issues we discussed during the last meeting:
http://mxxxxxxxxx.nl/
and!
there is a secret muse office currently being build that can be accessed through:
http://mxxxxxxxxxx....
using the password: xxxxxxx
so far there is only a department for emails and for exhibitions
both are still quite limited in there functionality,
but this allows you to start playing around
and already do little bit of curating
in the meantime i will extend it with more and more features
like editing tags and the information page
and well,
we'll talk about it a bit more in real life!

hey bram and brigiet
bram, i know you told me i can wait with the feedback but there are some things that popped up while i started working on the expo that we need to address so i'll just add what i have now and you can make priorities afterwards.
brigiet, there are also some things that might be nice to discuss with you, for example - what happens with attachments in the archive, how are they presented? bram, would it be possible that they are integrated in the email (that they dont need an external link to open?)
EMAILS COMING IN:
- it's not possible to see the attachments
- language option missing
CURRENT EXPO:
- where do i enter the exhibition dates?
- i think a preview exhibition would be a nice feature at some point so i dont have to change the current one to see how it looks
- attachments in expo space - we said we would just have have the text - is this already a feature
- in the emails as they are exhibited now i am missing the header (from, to, date, etc)
ARCHIVE
missing filters:
all
language
when you open an archived email, could it be possible to move from one email to the other?
tags: if the person who donates an email leaves some spaces, i think for the tags it looks better if the spaces are not empty but we used words like From and to: anonymous, subject: none, date, Time: data not given/not set …
how do we show attachments in the archive? now i think they are not visible
tags are filter categories
maybe it would be interesting to have a search option in the archive
for me it would be nice if emails could shuffle
Ok, so much for now, I am sure more will come soon :)

so this morning i woke up thinking again about idea of the radio show as a presentation. not sure if it is a good idea or not anymore, but since i was so convinced at the moment, i share it with you.
there could be an intro jingle (maybe this), that fades out after some seconds to a lower volume to leave space for the presenter, who introduces the program and you. he talks about your biography/whatever, and eventually move into a more of a dialogue/interview, and the comments from the people that attended the feedback day.
during the program there can be constantly some music (like this or this), as long as playing music with copyright is allowed in such a thing...
anyway, just a thought...

So my dear helpers
this is the email we are going for for tomorrow's music wishes on Radio MUSE :)
(it was impossible to decide which one to take, but time is running out and i still have some scripts to write)
so basically, some instructions for the big day
you call to the "studio" and ask us to play a song that you want to hear while reading this email
you might also do some small chat with the radio host, more or less just a couple of polite phrases
and that will be it!
thanks a lot for helping out

i am super sleepy
and haven't managed to write anything yet as i spent the last few hours trying to figure out what emails to even include in the show
haven't made much progress there either
i'll try to get up at 6 and do some typing (utopia)
in any case. there will be something arriving to you in a shared google doc before 10.00.
let's hope some writing devil obsesses me in the early hours….
p.s. share the music email with pedro, if possible. thanks.

hey hey
I was going through the exhibition emails last night and somehow realized that I'm still missing a lot of emails if I wanna actually tell a "story"
but also that i might have to throw some of the ones that are there now out because now that the idea of an exhibition is getting clearer, it might be better without them
the muse email database is so big it was impossible to make a final selection
so the night ended up in panic as i got the feeling i was making tracks for emails that might ended out of the exhibition in the end
but, anyway, there is no more time
this is, anyway, a test
i wrote 3 text proposals for 3 tracks and we see what we can do
Etienne, have a look and edit as you please
Sergio, if you look at track #2 - feedback, I'm thinking how it's done now maybe we could even interview them one by one?
Anyway, we can discuss later.
Late for school.

under control, yes
slightly lost with the exhibition
trying to find emails that would tell a story
if there is such a thing in the making of
coordinating sound, voice, my head, expo, panic.
but actually it's quite peaceful on this side, for once.
very enjoyable as well.

yes usually it's 8MB
i could try to raise it

it would take quite a while before they would start playing,
you could try to lower the bitrate
something 128 kbit
how long are the tracks?
